"I don't know whether you can understand that one may make a poem only by arranging colors, in the same way that you can say comforting things in music." -- Vincent van Gogh in a letter to his sister Wilhelmina, c. 16 November 1888.

A Bad Van Gogh Painting?
No doubt the publicist at the Ashmolean Museum will be horrified, but I think the painting "The Restaurant de la Sirene, at Asnieres" in the museum's collection is an example of a bad Van Gogh painting. The colors are insipid; the overall tone subdued and uninspiring. The composition is confused, with an empty foreground as if he'd got tired of working on the painting and so didn't put anything in here. Read more...

The Guerilla Art Kit
Let's be clear, it's guerilla, as in under-miner of the social status quo, not gorilla as in a hirsute animal found in central Africa. 1) Painting Branded Items
Sir Mac says: "I suspect [painting branded items] would hinge on whether you were seen to be exploiting a brand identity for personal gain. Exactly what exploiting came down to would be subjective, but I wouldn't think that if the items were merely incidental in a painting there would be a problem, but if it was the main subject of the painting being sold for a substantial amount then it might well be."

2) Painting a Non-Streaky Sky
Scotsrob says: "I have only recently taken up acrylic painting and seem to be having a problem with the continuity of a mainly singular color when painting a large area of sky. As you know acrylics dry so fast and I find it hard to 'keep up' and end up with streaks or differing shades of whatever colors I am using. How can I keep my skies consistent?"

3) Most Over-used Subject in Paintings
Brian says: "I like flowers and I have considered doing close up paintings of them. But I always think these flowers are everywere, why bother. I understand why artists are drawn to them, they are the best source of brilliant colors in nature other then fall leaves."
