Living With Special Needs

From Terri Mauro, your Guide to Children With Special Needs
February 14 is less than a week away, and these days of parties and treats and expected expressions of love can feel like an obstacle course to parents of kids with special needs. Here's how to navigate the perils of allergen-laden sweets and complicated emotions, and find a little support for yourself, too.

Before You Celebrate Valentine's Day
Read my round-up of resources, including recipes for allergy-safe baked goods, food-free gifts and affirmations, books on love-related issues, and Love Notes for Special Parents.

Valentine Cards for Special Parents
Speaking of those Love Notes for Special Parents, I've made up some printable Valentine's cards with those messages on the front. Why not give one to a parent who has helped you out with advice and support? Or, you know, print one out, fold it up, and surprise yourself with it on Valentine's Day.

When Did Your Child First Say 'I Love You'?
My daughter was in elementary school, and recited those words with all of the emotion of the speech-therapy exercise it was. Still, in my book, any declaration of love counts. Do you have a story about your child's first time with those three little words? Share them on the Readers' Respond page.

How Do You Tell Your Child 'I Love You'?
Of course, if your child has speech or emotional delays that make them unlikely to say those words, they may have trouble understanding them as well -- which means parents have to find sneaky ways of showing love without telling. I've listed 31 ways to do that, and now it's your turn. Share your strategies on the Readers' Respond page.
